On December 26, 2024, five journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip. The victims were employees of the Palestinian Al-Quds Today channel. Their names were Fadi Hassouna, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh Ali, Mohammad Al-Ladah, Faisal Abu Al-Kumsan, and Ayman Al-Jadi.
The incident occurred near the Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The journalists were collecting news while seated in their satellite broadcasting van when a missile attack from a drone hit their vehicle. It took 20 minutes to recover the bodies as they were completely burned.
As a result of this attack, the number of journalists killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza has exceeded 200.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported in its annual report that direct attacks on journalists in Gaza have increased since October 2023. So far, at least 35 journalists have been targeted and killed by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) while on duty.
This incident has heightened international concern over the safety of journalists. RSF Director-General Christophe Deloire commented that the profession of journalism in Gaza is under serious threat.
